It was a dark and stormy night in Manhattan, and Rick didn’t want to be alone. He felt lonely and he needed a woman. He knew what
happen. The same thing that always happens; He go to a bar, order a beer, then another beer and then a whisky. He’d drink until he stand up and then he’d try to meet a girl. It was always a disaster.
‘Hi there, what
I get you?’ asked the barman.
‘A Bud, and some peanuts.’ Said Rick, as he looked around the bar for possible female company.
There was no one of interest. Two young boys with ‘chicken-head’ haircuts playing pool. An old man in the corner with a newspaper and a pint of Guinness and a young couple kissing next to the video machine. ‘This bar
the nightlife centre of New York State’, thought Rick, sarcastically.
He finished his beer and asked for another. As he was paying the door opened and a young girl came in. She had long brown hair and was unusually beautiful despite looking sad and unhappy. She was holding a small wooden box.
‘ I buy you a drink, babe?’ Rick asked the girl, ‘You look as though you
need one.’
‘Well,’ replied the girl, ‘I really because I’m only fifteen, but if you insist I’ll have a double brandy.’
‘A double brandy, Mac.’ Said Rick to the barman. Rick turned to speak to the girl and raised his glass. ‘My luck
changing. So far my day has been a complete disaster, you’re the best thing that’s happened to me. Tell me kid, what’s in that box?’
The girl looked at Rick with sadness in her eyes. ‘I show you. I open it.’
‘But what’s in it?’ insisted Rick, ‘You can tell me.’
‘No I . Please stop!’
‘Listen. You’d better tell me kid, or I’ll report you for drinking underage’.
‘But you bought me the drink! You damn cops are all the same!’
‘I’m not a cop honey,’ said Rick, ‘I’m a private investigator. Now tell me what’s in the damn box!’
‘Your dreams.’ said the girl, ‘Everything you wish for.’
‘Did you open the box?’ asked Rick.
‘Yes, of course.’ replied the girl, ‘That’s why I’m so sad.’
‘I don’t understand’, said Rick, ‘Why you be sad if you have your dreams in a box? Isn’t that a good thing?’
‘No’, replied the girl, ‘When you have your dreams in your hands, what else is there?’
