Logistics Vocabulary
Shipping company – to ship (verb)
Freight - Freight Forwarder - a company that receives and ships goods on behalf
of other companies. - An agent. "the freight forwarder chooses whether to ship a
consignment by road, by rail, or by sea"
Airfreight- Ocean freight
Carrier - A freight carrier is a company that specializes in shipping, and they
directly handle your cargo.
Cargo containers - The price of containers has skyrocketed. There’s been a knock-on
effect.
Truck – Lorry – long distance - articulated lorry (2 or more sections)
Petrol, fuel tankers
Trucker / lorry drivers. There is a shortage of lorry drivers in the UK.
Port- Dock workers
Vessel - a ship or large boat. / a hollow container, especially one used to hold
liquid, such as a bowl.
Load – Unload – to load up - a load (noun) – a load/loads of something (a load
of washing) – ‘take a load off’ (your feet) = sit down
Pallet - The warehouse was full of pallets stacked with boxes.
Fork-lift truck
Inventory - a complete list of items such as property, goods in stock, or the
contents of a building. (stock) do a stocktake (UK) / to take inventory (US)
inventories have been run down due to COVID
Customs
Warehouse – staff shortages in UK warehouses due to Brexit.
Supply Chain
