Phase 1 (>5)
Kindergarten / Infants 3-6 - newer terms are: Early childhood (in the age range
of 0 to 2 years), pre-primary education (3-6)
Phase 2 (5-11)
Primary school / playground / school dinners/ reading & writing / creative
crafts / foreign languages / school plays /school trips
Phase 3 - (12-16/18)
Secondary/High school / Names of subjects: biology, physics, chemistry, mother
and foreign languages, literature, philosophy, maths, art, sport, music,
computer science, to sit an exam / to pass/fail an exam
Phase 4
Higher education / university entrance exams, entrance marks/interviews,
University / Apprenticeships / Night school /technical college/gap year
bachelor’s degree / master’s degree / BA and MSc / PhD / undergraduate -
postgraduate
master’s degree – comes after, or is longer than, a bachelor’s degree
eg. She has a BA (Bachelor of Arts) in History; He’s doing an MSc in Mathematics
(Master of Science) at Oxford.
a doctorate or PhD – the highest post-graduate uni. qualification, requiring a
few years of study, research and a doctoral thesis
an undergraduate – a student studying on a bachelor’s (first) degree course
a graduate – a person who has completed a bachelor’s degree course
a post-graduate – a person who is studying on a higher course after passing
their first degree.
