Phrasal verbs
Many phrasal verbs have multiple meanings. Some of these meanings have
an equivalent, more formal, verb.
1. Make up – Invent (make up a story, make
up an excuse)
2. Turn down – Reject (turn down a job, offer)
3. Come back – Return (Why do cats always come back to the same house?)
4. Put off – Postpone (I’ve been putting off doing exercise)
5. Put up with – Tolerate (We have to put up with noisy
neighbours)
6. Come over – Visit (next time you’re in Valencia you should
come over)
7. Leave out – Omit (I posted this Facebook Live on Twitter but I
left out the link.)
8. Go ahead – Continue (you go ahead and speak) (Can I have
another chocolate biscuit? - Of course! Go ahead)
9. Bring up - Raise (a Topic) When was the last time you had a
conversation with a friend and the subject of coronavirus wasn’t brought
up!)
10. Look into – Investigate – Many companies based in Hong Kong
are looking into the possibility of moving their business to another
country) (I’m looking into buying a folding bike. Are you looking into
buying anything new?)
11. Set up - Arrange, prepare (What do we need to do to set up
this Facebook Live? – turn off the phone, get some water, have a shave,
put on a clean shirt)
12. Call off – Cancel (The manager called off the meeting. The
meeting was called off)
13. Give up - Quit, Stop (What have you given up recently? – I’ve
given up keeping a journal)
