Today La Mansión Del Inglés is in France, and we’re here with Val who is
American, but she has studied cookery in
Paris and now lives in a lovely French
farmhouse.
Hello Val, welcome to La Mansión Del Inglés.
Hello. Nice to be here.
Val, I’d like to ask you to explain some cooking vocabulary. For example, I know that cut is cortar in Spanish, but
what about slice, chop and dice?
Slice is to cut along the same piece, in one sort of movement of whatever you’re cutting. To dice…to chop is to cut into
smaller pieces, and to dice is to cut into
smaller than that.
Right. Also the verb to heat is 'calentar', but what’s the difference between to simmer, to boil and to steam?
Simmer is to heat ‘till you get to almost boiling which is when you have little
bubbles…er.. maintaining. Boiling is to have the liquid come to a big big bubbles
Violent bubbles.
Violent bubbles, yes, violent bubbles. And steam i…is with vapour.
With… with water, you’re steaming…err.. you have a product and you put it with water and you cook it without it touching the water.
Right, thank you. |
