Aunque su empleo en un lenguaje formal no es correcto, su uso está muy extendido ya que permiten reducir el texto con lo que se gana en contenido permitiendo mensajes más cortos. Asimismo, al igual que los emoticonos, transmiten muchos de ellos un estado de ánimo o una mayor expresividad que el lenguaje tradicional. En inglés el uso de estos acrónimos y siglas a modo de slang (lenguaje coloquial) está muy extendido y de ahí la importancia de conocer el significado de los términos más comunes.
